A fresh wave of scandal has broken out online over new claims that Chinese President Xi Jinping's daughter, who is said to be living in Massachusetts, is having her American whereabouts shielded by China's People's Liberation Army (PLA).
The subject, widely suspected to be Xi Mingze, was once a student at Harvard University.
The controversy broke out after American far-right influencer Laura Loomer shared a statement on X (formerly Twitter), declaring "LET'S G0! DEPORT XI JINPING DAUGHTER! She resides in Massachusetts and attended Harvard! Sources are saying PLA guards from the CCP hire her private security on US territory." Loomer also called out Republican Senator Marco Rubio and demanded she be deported immediately.
The timing of her post comes amid new federal policy actions aiming to target Chinese students in the United States. Senator Rubio recently announced forthcoming visa revocations for Chinese nationals, specifically those with ties to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in sensitive fields.
"The US will start revoking visas of Chinese students, including those with links to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields," Rubio posted on X.
These are all part of an overarching national security and immigration policy under the Trump administration that seeks to cut Chinese presence within American universities and tech institutions.
Adding to the woes is increasing federal scrutiny at Harvard University. The university had its authorization to accept new international students suspended by the Department of Homeland Security, alleging noncompliance with federal regulations. The suspension, however, has been temporarily halted by a federal judge pending ongoing legal action.
President Trump has also suggested restricting international student intake at Harvard to 15%, a considerable decrease from the present level of approximately 27%. On this front, federal authorities have requested that the university provide detailed nationality information on its students.
Loomer's allegation elicited lukewarm responses on social media. One questioned China's interests:
"I thought China was self-sufficient and wouldn't need USA universities."
Another defended Loomer's position, stating: "That is a good place to start with." A third proposed a strategic chance: "Maybe this can be used to negotiate a better bargain with China."
As of writing, official confirmation or denial of the reported PLA presence in the U.S. for Xi Mingze's protection has not been forthcoming.
